Life often presents us with critical decisions that determine our future. One of the most powerful and beneficial skills we can develop in this journey is the ability to embrace rejection and capitalise on the power of "No". This simple but impactful word can transform our lives, catalysing personal growth, resilience, and success. By embracing the power of no, particularly in the face of negativity or doubt, we can propel ourselves forward in ways we never expected.

One of the main conversations that we have with athletes and parents in TRI is about the experience of suffering rejection on their rugby journey. Many young aspirational athletes find themselves on a talent ID pathway as part of professional club development pathways. Athletes are often being scouted or identified from a young, which is often driven by the club, school or coaching group that the player represents. Taboo terminolgy and the use of words such as nepotism or bias in the selection procces of young talent ID is not spoken about enough but like in any walk of life - "its who you know' that often paves a pathway for an individual. Where nepotism or "who knows who" often are easy excuses for young athletes to justify the rejection, those who are honest with themsleves, resilient and truly commited to embracing rejection step up to the next level. We are seeing the current Lions coach, And Farrell's decision making being questioned around "picking" his son Owen, however even a proven world class player like Owen, will harness the negativity about his selection and in many ways will use it as fuel to reignite his career.

Facing Limiting Beliefs (ie Coaches Opinions)

Limiting beliefs often arise from external criticism or individual coaching expectations. The phrase "you won’t make it" can resonate deeply and hinder progress. These are words that we will never say to a young aspirational athlete.

Instead we will work with each athletes offering a fully holistic support to identify reasons of rejection, embrace the power of no to dismiss negativity and reaffirm their beliefs about their aspirations and capabilities.

Transformative Rejections

Away from rugby, the story of J.K. Rowling, who faced 12 rejections from publishers before "Harry Potter" was finally accepted is a fantastic example of how rejection taught her more about her craft and helped her refine her vision.

Every "no" we encounter can also be a transformative experience. Rejection doesn’t signify the end; it serves as an invitation to redirect our efforts. Instead of viewing rejection as a failure, we should see it as a crucial step towards discovering what truly resonates with us.
